john berman, sitting next to me. that was his gig last night. you have debated president obama. do you think it's possible to -- that he can do a comeback? is it doable in what have you seen as someone who has prepped to be against him? >> i do, soledad. this president is very smart. he's very intelligent. he's an excellent speaker. i think he was fairly rsty. he has had four years, relatively unchallenged in the things that he has said. mitt went through a very tough primary, as we all know. i think that showed up last night. i would not underestimate the president of the united states in the next couple of debates and i don't think mitt will either. >> next debate is going to focus on foreign policy and our latest polling shows that president obama has an advantage there, 52% to 43% even after the crisis in libya that you and i have spoken a lot about. what do you think governor romney, who you support, what do you think he has to do to make headway there? >> just point out the facts, that we're in retreat, withdrawal, iraq is unraveling, al qaeda is on the upswing every place in the

. that means we need to stop digging by electing mitt romney the next president of the united states. of course the middle class has been buried. they're being buried by regulations. they're being buried by taxes. they're being buried by borrowing. they're being buried by the obama administration's economic failures. >> reporter: romney campaign put together a conference call to draw attention, more focus to the comments by the vice president. the obama campaign pushed back saying this was just another act of desperation and what the vice president was talking about were -- were situations or a climate that was put in place by the failed policies of the former administration. i'll tell you what, at the very next event during his remarkings, the vice president did touch on the same subject but left out the word buried. soledad? >> walk us through the logistics of tonight. how's it going to run? >> reporter: right. well, first of all, it will focus on the domestic policies, focus on the economy, on health care, on the role of government. it will be a 90-minute debate. six segments of 1

president obama's going to win the debates. that's why it's a great opportunity for governor romney to have an upset. he needs an upset. i think that he can do that on this debate and the next two debates. we go back historically, we remember it was a game changer when president kennedy debated richard nixon. same was true with ronald reagan when he debated jimmy carter. it can make a difference. mitt romney needs to come out and be very aggressive about the president's policies and his solutions. and i think he will do real good. >> we know they've been rehearsing zingers or we're told by a "new york times" report this morning that mitt romney has been practicing zingers. i guess practicing them on some of his aides as well. you just talked about substance. others have been focusing on, well, really it's the moments and the zingers that make the difference. which do you think it is? >> there has to be a sense throughout -- at the end of the debate, the viewer will have a sense as to who can be the better leader for the united states. and mitt romney has to come across as, well, he can

is what's going to be the tone of mitt romney and president obama? what they want to know is what are you going to do? how are you going to make my life better over the next four years? we spent more time focused, talking about what -- when i say we i mean a broad media. superficial stuff, what color tie they have on, how are they standing, were they sighing as opposed to what had did they say? that's what matters to somebody sitting out there. >> this comes to someone criticizing the color of my tie before. >> dude, think about it. you need some color. >> governor strickland, i'm surprised how optimistic he s he sounds like the race is over and that obama has this sewn up. >> sour surrogate. >> kudos to him for saying what he believes. usually they play expectations down, talk about what a great debater obama is and how terrible romney strickland was sounding like it's over. >> i'm so tired of playing down expectations. >> me, too. romney is promising to honor temporary work permits for younger illegal immigrants who were allowed to remain in the u.s. after that executive order w

about president obama and what he's going to do in the next 12 days to really get up to speed. >> cram. >> to really bring a totally different president obama to the debate in 12 days. what are you hearing in terms of how he's going to prepare differently? what are your sources telling you? he did so badly, of course. >> i have to say, when you first say that, there's this great tweet. i wish i could credit whoever said it. they said two words. red bull, which just cracked me up completely. >> red bull. >> but i don't really think that's what the white house is telling him or what the re-elect committee is telling him. we don't have sources to tell us this, but they do. this is a president -- and they said from the beginning, that day, what's the president going to do? they said he's going to talk to the american people. he's going to speak directly to the american people. the only problem is mitt romney was on the stage. it didn't work. not engaging him looked like he just didn't know anything. and so, you know, which we know not to be the truth. the man has been steeped in p
